The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president started showing all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week research projected his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is emphatically not the account of a mighty king emerging; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for others, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The evident and straightforward reality that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a kind of radical love centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion something of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We must have to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended by relationship to that which renders it unique and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it mean feigning the most negative regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both humility and conviction, a blend that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
